Opening and closing a till
A teller’s daily cycle: opening float, cash transactions, closing count and variance.
Start of day — open the till
- Open (or open your till).
- Select the branch vault and enter the opening amount — the float you are given. Zung refuses if the vault does not have enough balance.
- Count the cash handed to you and confirm.
During the day
Every deposit, withdrawal, repayment or disbursement made with a payment type marked is cash moves money in or out of your till. Non-cash transactions (M-Pesa, bank) don’t touch the till.
End of day — close the till
- Count all cash in your drawer.
- Close the till and enter the closing amount you counted.
- Zung shows the expected closing amount (opening + cash in − cash out) and the variance between the two.
- Return the cash to the vault — recorded as till float returned.
| Field | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Opening amount | required | Float issued from the vault. |
| Closing amount | required | Cash you counted at close. |
| Expected closing amount | calculated | What should be in the till according to the transactions posted. |
| Variance | calculated | Closing − expected. Zero means the till balances. |
Tip
A variance usually means a cash transaction was posted with the wrong payment type, posted twice, or not posted. Check the day’s transactions before closing with a variance.
