Payment types
Cash, M-Pesa, bank and cheque channels — and why the “is cash” flag matters for tellers.
A payment type is the channel money moves through. Every disbursement, repayment, deposit and withdrawal records one, so reports can show collections by channel and the till knows when cash is involved.
Fields
| Field | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Name | required | e.g. Cash, M-Pesa, Bank transfer, Cheque. |
| Description | optional | Internal note. |
| Is cash | optional | Tick only for physical cash. Cash transactions move money in and out of the teller’s till; non-cash ones never touch the till. |
| Position | optional | Sort order in drop-down lists — put your most-used channel first. |
| Active | optional | Inactive types are hidden from new transactions but remain on past ones. |
Important
If “Cash” is not marked as cash, tellers’ tills will not balance: cash they take in won’t be counted in the expected closing amount.
M-Pesa settings
An M-Pesa payment type has extra settings so Zung can send STK Push requests and receive confirmations:
| Field | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Business shortcode | required | Your Paybill or Till number. |
| Consumer key / consumer secret | required | From your Safaricom Daraja app. |
| Passkey (Lipa na M-Pesa Online) | required | Used to sign STK Push requests. |
| Environment | required | Sandbox for testing, production for live money. |
| Test phone number | optional | Number used to test STK Push in sandbox. |
Important
Keep the consumer secret and passkey private. Anyone with them can initiate payment prompts in your name.
