Recording repayments
Single, bulk and imported repayments, how money is allocated, editing and reversing.
Record a repayment
- Open the active loan and click Repayment.
- Enter the amount, the date and the payment type.
- Enter the receipt number — for M-Pesa, the confirmation code.
- Add a description if needed and save. Zung allocates the money and prints a receipt.
| Field | Required | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | required | Amount received. |
| Date | required | Value date — the day the money was received, not the day you post it. |
| Payment type | required | Cash, M-Pesa, bank… Cash goes into the teller’s till. |
| Receipt | optional | Receipt or M-Pesa code — searchable later. |
| Cheque number, account number, bank name, routing code | optional | For cheque and bank payments. |
| Description | optional | Shown on the member’s statement. |
| Apply charge | optional | Add a charge at the same time (choose the charge, amount and date). |
How the money is split
The product’s repayment order decides what is paid first. With the default order, a payment covers penalties, then fees, then interest, then principal — oldest instalment first.
Note
A payment larger than the balance makes the loan overpaid. Refund or transfer the excess so the member’s balance shows zero.
Bulk repayments
lets you post many repayments at once — e.g. after a group meeting. You can also import a spreadsheet of repayments; each row needs the loan, amount, date and payment type.
Edit or reverse
- Edit repayment corrects the amount, date or details of a repayment posted with a mistake.
- Reverse repayment cancels it entirely (for a bounced cheque, or a payment posted to the wrong loan). The reversal is recorded — nothing is deleted.
Tip
Field officers on unreliable connections should use the mobile or desktop app, which retries safely without double-posting. Developers: see offline-safe repayments with client_ref.
